AVOID UNETHICAL TALENT AGENCIES

Edmonton Alberta March 28 2006.

ACTRA is concerned about the number of unethical agencies operating in the film and television industry in the Province of Alberta.

These unethical talent agencies make their money by “packaging” performers. If an agency charges a “sign up” or “administration” fee they are already making money without having to actually find work for the performer they represent. In addition, if, as a condition of representation, it is required that you use a specific photographer or take courses for grossly inflated prices, you are not dealing with an ethical agency.

Talent agencies are not engagers, producers or casting directors. Casting directors are employees of the producer. They are hired to find talent. Agents represent talent. Ethical talent agents charge a commission (usually around 15%) based on income for work they have procured for the performer.

The Entertainment Industry Coalition (EIC) was formed in early 1996 to deal with the problem of unethical talent agents in Canada. The EIC is supported by ACTRA, TAMAC (Talent Agents and Managers Association of Canada), CAEA (Canadian Actors’ Equity Association), CDC (Casting Directors Society of Canada) and UDA (Union des Artistes). A copy of the EIC Code of Ethical Conduct is posted at www.actratoronto.com.

There are no guarantees in this industry. Working in the film and television business requires commitment and lots of hard work. Do not be misled by unethical agents who are really in the business to defraud people of thousands of dollars every year.
